A mask does not hide a person so much as license them. Put one on and you get to find out who you are when nothing you do will be attributed to you afterwards.
These stories deal in doubles, impersonation and stolen knowledge: two identical faces where one becomes the other, a secret one character can never unknow, a club where names are the only thing not permitted. Somebody is always lying, and the interesting question is never whether they'll be caught — it's how much they're enjoying it.
